What is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is the UK government's global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. Each year it brings future leaders from over 160 countries to study in the UK, and Nepal has its own dedicated programme, with applications for the 2027-28 cycle open right now.
It covers a one-year taught master's degree at any eligible UK university. You pick the course. The funding covers tuition fees in full, a monthly stipend for living costs, economy airfare to and from the UK, and arrival and departure allowances.
Am I eligible? The five checks
- Nepali citizen. You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country, and Nepal is one. You must also agree to return to Nepal for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
- An undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's programme.
- 2,800 hours of work experience gained after your degree, roughly two years of full-time work. Full-time jobs, part-time work, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships all count, and you can list up to 15 separate periods.
- Three eligible UK master's courses selected in your application.
- An unconditional offer from at least one of those courses by the deadline in Chevening's official timeline.
There is no age limit.
What does the application ask for?
The heart of the application is four essays:
- Leadership and influence, a real situation where you led and changed an outcome.
- Networking, how you build and use professional relationships.
- Study in the UK, why these three courses, why these universities, why the UK.
- Career plan, what you will do after the master's, and how it connects to Nepal.
You also provide your work history, the three course choices, and contact details for two referees. Everything is submitted through the online system at chevening.org/apply, note down your unique access code, you will need it at every stage.
How do I make the essays strong?
Three rules that separate winners from the pile:
- One story per essay, with your fingerprints on it. Reviewers read thousands of essays about "my passion for development." They remember the applicant who describes the exact Tuesday they convinced three village elders to try a new seed variety. Specific beats grand.
- Connect the dots: past → UK course → future in Nepal. Your leadership story should explain your course choice, and your course choice should explain your career plan. If the four essays feel like four different people wrote them, you lose.
- Name real things. Real course modules, real professors, real organisations in Nepal you will work with afterwards. Vague plans ("I want to contribute to Nepal's development") are the most common reason strong profiles get rejected.
What is the timeline after I apply?
| Stage | When |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 4 August 2026 |
| Application deadline | 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC |
| Reading committee assessment | October 2026 – January 2027 |
| Interview shortlist | Mid-February 2027 |
| Interviews | March – April 2027 |
| Results | From mid-June 2027 |
| Studies begin in the UK | September / October 2027 |
Interviews happen in Kathmandu. They test the same four themes as the essays, if your essays were honest, the interview is just a conversation.
What should I do this week?
- Count your hours. Add up every job, internship, and volunteering stint since graduation. If you are under 2,800, stop and target a different scholarship.
- Shortlist three courses using Chevening's course finder, one ambitious, one realistic, one safe.
- Draft one essay, start with leadership, it is the hardest. Write the true story first, polish later.
- Contact your two referees now. Give them three weeks, not three days.
Applications close 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Apply only on the official site.
